What to do in Mirissa:
Free / Low Budget
Mirissa Beach Itself – A glorious stretch of sand lined with palm trees and various restaurants and bars. Sit in front of a bar and enjoy lounge chair service or find one of the quieter greener areas and just relax on the sand in the shade.
Snorkeling – The entire South Coast of Sri Lanka is teeming with turtles. Many of the species breed in these water. Turtles lay their eggs at night on the main beach, but just a few hundred metres further along there is a small calm bay were a few turtles are resident and can be frequently seen eating the sea grass. Snorkeling equipment is available for rent along the beach. When searching for them, stand by the shore and wait 10-15 mins until you see their head pop up out of the water. Stay away from the nearby rocks as the water can be shallow and a small current exists.
Sunsets – There are some great spots to catch sunset in Mirissa. Between Dec-Apr, the sun sets further south and affords better viewing of the sun itself. Try Coconut Point, Giragala Rock (be very careful ascending and descending the steps – it is a little dangerous), the hilltop temple (ascend the stairs next to the Tourist Police station) and Malima Bay Villas (access through Mirissa Harbour).
Secret Beach – This not-so-secret beach is a perfect little hideaway from the main beach. Swimming isn’t the best as there are rocks in the water but you can enter when the water is calm and do some snorkeling or to just cool off. The small beach is very picturesque. 20 minute walk from the hostel.
Photos at Coconut Point – Great photos opportunities exist at sunrise and sunset (when the colours are best) at this now popular symmetrical outcrop of coconut trees on contrasting red earth by the sea. Only a 15 min walk from town. Don’t expect your photo to be people free during the peak season at sunset. Avoid the middle of the day and consider going at sunrise.
Surfing – The point break in Mirissa is a fun, if not short, reef break best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. There is reef, current and sea-urchins, so be careful! Another deeper reef break exists on the other side of Giragala Rock that works best during the main season and can be suitable for experienced beginners (closer to shore) and intermediates (further out). More details can be found here. Board rental ~ Rs.400-800/hour.
Music/Entertainment – During the main season there is usually one bar on the beach that stays open late each night. The music can be somewhat hit and miss but if you are up for it, it can be fun. The drink prices can be a little steep on these nights so get your fill beforehand.
Yoga Classes – We offer daily yoga classes during the main season. Click here for details. Our price is Rs.2,000/class. Other classes in Mirissa can be up to Rs.3,500/class.
Mirissa Harbour – The harbour is one of busier on the South Coast, accommodating both fishing vessels and whale watching charters. At sunrise the harbour is a frantic spectacle of colour and noise as auctions are carried out to disseminate the freshly caught fish to wholesalers, local restaurants and hotels and residents at the highest price. The boats are all brightly painted, parked side by side, and number in their 100’s, make for some good photos.
Local Market – Twice a week, behind the bus stop, a small local market is held selling mostly fruits and vegetables. Visit it Thursday and Sunday from 6am-10:30am. If it is a public holiday, the market will usually be held the day before.
Medium Budget
Whale Watching – Mirissa is arguably the best place in the world to see Blue Whales. Tours depart at 6:30am from the harbour. Ask us which ethical companies we recommend. Click here for more information. $60-65/person.
Ayuervedic Massage / Treatment – Traditional ayurvedic treatments and massages are a good way to pamper yourself if you require some stress relief or if the weather is a bit too “tropical”. Usually a 1 hour treatment is Rs.4,000-4,500 or 1.5 hours Rs.5,000-6,000. Ask us for our spa recommendations.
Dining on the Beach – Enjoying a cool drink at sunset with your feet in sand, the warm waves lapping up under your chair whilst eating fresh local seafood sounds magical right? Well it is. And it’s quite a beautiful sight during the season. But not all restaurants are made equal. Ask us for our top restaurant tips for a special dinner. $20-40 including drinks for two.
